Surge Agent

Explained

AI terms, in plain language

RAG, AEO, GEO, agents: the AI trade scatters abbreviations. Here each term is explained in plain language with the answer up front — the same explanation our chatbot and service pages use.

RAG

What is RAG (retrieval-augmented generation)?

RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) is a technique where an AI model first looks up the answer in a defined knowledge base and only then writes its reply. If the answer isn't in there, the model invents nothing and says it doesn't know. That makes RAG the standard way to let a chatbot talk reliably about one business.

SEO

What is SEO (search engine optimization)?

SEO (search engine optimization) is setting up your website so Google understands and shows it: technology (speed, sitemap, clean HTML), content (pages answering your customers' questions) and authority (mentions and links). SEO is about positions in the classic list of blue links — for direct answers and AI search there are AEO and GEO.

AEO

What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is writing and structuring your pages so search engines can lift your answer literally into the answer box: the question as a heading, the complete answer in 40 to 60 words directly beneath it, wrapped in FAQ markup. Whoever gets quoted wins the click before the list of links even starts.

GEO

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO (generative engine optimization) is making your business findable for AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini: structured data (schema.org markup) stating who you are and what you cost, an llms.txt, and consistent business details across the web. More and more people ask an AI for a recommendation — GEO decides whether you are that answer.

AI agent

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is software that carries out a task independently instead of only answering: it reads incoming email or documents, decides within pre-agreed rules what needs to happen, and does it — following up a quote, booking a receipt, scheduling an appointment. The difference with a chatbot: a chatbot talks, an agent works.

Chatbot or AI agent

What's the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent?

A chatbot talks to your customer: it sits on your website or WhatsApp, answers questions, catches enquiries and books appointments. An AI agent works behind the scenes with no conversation: chasing quotes, booking receipts, following up invoices. Voicebots are chatbots on the phone. Most businesses start with one of the two and add the rest later.
